Reddit tests query-targeted ads in app search results

Reddit is testing advertisements in its app’s search results, giving a select group of eligible advertisers access to placements intended to reach users as they look for information and products. The test adds a new opportunity for brands to appear alongside discovery activity within the platform, but Reddit has not announced a broader rollout.

The ads are targeted by search query and marked as advertising in the results panel. Reddit says placements will draw on its existing ad-targeting capabilities for search results pages, with delivery influenced by multiple factors and primarily aligned to contextual relevance. The company describes those pages as having high purchase and search intent.

For advertisers, the approach connects campaign exposure to the subject a person is actively investigating on Reddit. That may make search placements distinct from ads encountered while browsing feeds: the query provides an immediate context for what the user wants to learn or find. The company has not disclosed details such as pricing, test size, campaign formats, or performance benchmarks.

Discovery is central to Reddit’s pitch

Reddit is positioning the test around the role its communities play in helping people discover information and perspectives. The company has said that half of its users report the platform helps them discover something new. In a study published in July, Reddit found that 72% of its users come to the service seeking information; among that group, 64% have a specific goal in mind.

Those findings provide context for the advertising experiment, though they do not establish how search ads will perform or how users will respond to them. Reddit says it is continuing to improve the search experience while beginning to test commercial placements within it. The limited initial group means advertisers outside the eligible cohort should not assume the inventory is generally available.

The test also arrives as Reddit faces a change in traffic from external search. During the company’s third-quarter performance update, CEO Steve Huffman said search referrals fell by more than 1 million per week on average in October. The decline relates to traffic arriving at Reddit from search engines and other sources; it is separate from searches conducted inside Reddit’s app.

Reddit has also received significant citation volume from AI chatbots, according to the supplied account of the company’s search traffic. The reported drop in referrals underscores why the platform may have an interest in strengthening its own discovery experience, but the company has not said that the ad test is a response to any single traffic source or that it will offset referral losses.

What the test means for advertisers

For marketers, the experiment is an early indication that Reddit is exploring ways to monetize a high-intent moment within its product. Query-based targeting could let advertisers align promotions with the topics people are seeking out, while contextual relevance may help keep placements connected to the surrounding search activity. The test’s results will be needed to assess reach, user experience and business outcomes.

For now, the clearest practical detail is the scope: Reddit is starting with a select group of eligible advertisers. The company has not provided a timetable for expanding access, nor has it shared further specifications for targeting or measurement. Advertisers will need to wait for additional information before evaluating the placement as a broadly available channel.
